Carcassonne in Southern France boasts one of the finest walled fortresses still standing. The huge castle on the hill draws visitors to its walled city every year. Carcassone is actually made up of two areas: La Cité, which is the fortified city within ancient walls, and the 'ville basse" or Lower City, across the river from the castle. Within the walls of La Cité tourists can surround themselves with not only ancient architecture but shops and eateries devoted to medieval fare. The accommodations within La Cité offer great value to visitor, as the hotels are all inside the walls with the attractions a short stroll away, but if you require a hotel which is more secluded than the other part of the city is worth exploring. The lower city offers a wide range of hotel types and prices and a completely different experience: the ville basse is multicultural and casual with open air ethnic markets.
